• The Catch: No checking the synopsis or genre beforehand; the first line is the only gatekeeper.

• The Social: Post a photo of that first sentence, tag us on social media, and leave a comment (& The First Line) in the website's engagement space, The Quill & Cup letting everyone know if the book lived up to its opening line.
